Diablo 3: First Impressions

Ok, so yesterday I talked about the Daemonettes getting finished over the weekend.. well I have to say that it took a lot of will power to get them done, as the previous week I had picked up Diablo 3. Unless your not a PC Gamer, then you should know what this game is about.

New Projects!

Why more new projects? Don't I have enough on the go at the moment? NAPs 15mm Austrians, Daemons of Chaos, Chaos Dwarfs, and whatever else might pop up for the Eldar and Dark Elf armies that were recently finished ( but we all know that an army is never really finished! ).

So when I was contacted a few weeks back if I would be interested in painting up some models for a new client, I of course jumped at the chance!

Blast from the Past: Ogre Tyrant

The mighty Ogre Tyrant!!!

Way back in the day, before Ogres became all the rage I was building and converting a set for myself. Was almost 8 years ago that I had begun the army, and this guy was one that I converted just after coming to Turkey.

He was the the start of my Bretonnia Ogres!!! A regal Ogre, fighting with honor ( or as much as can be said of Ogres ) against any that didn't pay his mercenary fees..

Underneath this model is a regular Ogre Bull to at least provide the skeleton of the model in front of you, however from there I built up layer upon layer of green stuff.

Overall I think he came out really well, the chainmail was one of my first such attempts, and the layering of the breastplate was something that I had seen others have done like PsychosisPC ( heck I am even borrowing his idea of Old Stuff Wednesday for this post ). Great inspiration was made from his works, and others from the Ogre Stronghold forums.

Yedharo Models: War of the Zodiac Busts

So over the years I have been looking for some decent bust sculpts. I had recently purchased quite a few from Troll Trader on eBay that were from Scibor. Since then, I have been looking for even more.

Then while cruising around the net, I came across some very interesting bust sculpts based off of the Zodiac range! And wouldn't you know it, but one of the first ones was for Capricorn which is my wife's sign. Thought I was interested, I didn't quite purchase until I then saw the Sagittarius sculpt. So with this, it was pretty simple to order them, but how?

Blast from the Past: Daemon Prince

Seeing as how I will be posting a lot of my Daemons over the coming weeks/months.. I thought it might be a good kick off to show one of the first real complex conversion jobs I had done almost 10 yrs ago now also..

This was my deamon prince for my Chaos Space Marine army. Not sure what the load out was on him, but he was pretty loaded up to be a beast in close combat.. 2 hand weapons, extra talons, wings.. he got to where he needed to be in a hurry, and did what was required..

He was also painted up to reflect his devotion to Slannesh. Back in those days I was pretty obsessed with Slannesh, mostly due to its ability to grant immune to psychology, which was/is always an area I suffer the most in games. By removing that, I removed a lot of pain in playing, and thus could focus more on just running forward, shooting things until close combat happened.

Heresy: Blight Horde

Received a last minute email sent out from Andy over at Heresy Miniatures of a deal whereby if you spent 40, you only paid 30. I have always liked the miniatures that Andy has created, and figured that this was a good time as any to pick some up.

So with the deal code on the clipboard, I wandered on over to his website and had a little look around. Since my Daemon project is beginning to take off, I thought it only fitting to pick up some more Daemon models. It was a toss up between the Hellbeasts ( to stand in as Fiends ) or the Blights. Since I am more of a core collector, I went the Blight route.

MetuCon 40k Tusot Tournament - Game 3

Ok.. so after what I can only blame to be a horrible mess of a game 2.. and quite a sour experience with the organizers to boot.. I do my best to put it all behind me...

Also.. sorry for lack of photos in the beginning.. things moved so quickly that no photos were taken until Turn 4..

Whats funny is that my opponent had also lost his last game due to warnings.. but his stemmed from lack of FAQ, and lack of painting on his models.. then on a rule dispute over how his Jetbikes worked..

Jetbikes? Yes.. you guessed it.. I got to play against Dark Eldar again! However this time I would at least attempt to try to make it work better for me..

The first turn however was really uneventful, as was turn 2. His entire army was in reserves, as was mine! I actually placed models on the table before my opponent! A first if every there was one!

Whats more.. all of my units were on the table now on Turn 2! With my infantry sitting close to my corner, and my 2 Bloodthirsters and 2 Daemon Princes on his.. I was feeling much more confident on this game.

Of course his ability to drop some massive large template hits on my horrors did not make my life easy ;)

So with a few casualties, and a lack of being able to reach his fighter plane or raider, we continued on to turn 3..

Dark Eldar player brings more of his reserves into play now, and has moved a lot of his bikers, his 2 jet fighters, and some raiders near my infantry guys.. completely ignoring the big monsters on his side. Smart move.. wish I had thought of that :S

So with his bikes out in the open, I was drooling at the chance to open up on them with the flamers.. but oh no.. he knew what they could do.. and was forewarned.. so all remaining shots from his entire army went against them.. They did not stand a chance :) Only things left in the aftermath of that destruction were the Plaguebearers.. but then again they are like the cockroaches of the deamon army.. so this is not surprising..

Turn 4.. we have pictures!!!

So what happened here? Almost the entire Dark Eldar force is out now, and they are continuing to attempt to take down everything.. however I guess I have been holding back my 4/5/6s here cause most of my guys are surviving and the big guys are not taking any wounds!

The plaguebearers continue to take the brunt of the force of attacks, but survive.. and are able to charge into combat with the bikers.. though no casualties on either side occur.

As you can see.. we also got the night afternoon sun with its 25+ degree weather.. I was literally scared that my resin models would melt.. before I remembered that they were not finecast ;) 

Turn 5
With everything on the table, we begin to see a bit more of a strategy come out from the Dark Eldar player.. he begins by making sure that everything of his is out of range for both whatever shooting I had left ( death strike on Bloodthirsters ) or from Charges.. he continues to lay shots into everything, and causes a wound on the blue Bloodthirster.

From the Daemons side, the plaguebearers finally die in combat as they would be assaulted with over 70 attacks, but only just succumbing to the blows provided by the Dark Eldars. Having both the ward save and the regen on their side to protect them, but just not enough it seems.

The Bloodthirster is getting ready for some close combat fun, or at least is hoping to have some fun..

The blue Bloodthirster takes on the raider, destroying it as it did not move far enough, and kills 2 of the riders in the process.

The Daemon Princes of Nurgle hide.. yes.. they hide.. and try to survive..

Turn 6..

After a very fairly successful shooting phase on the red Bloodthirster with 3 wounds inflicted, the Dark Eldars attempt to charge him. Thinking that their Initiative of 6 will save them vs his 5..

The blue Bloodthirster is gunned down however and leaves the Princes to sit behind the building hoping they don't come for them.

So into combat.. with 10 wyches, archion, some other cc dude, 9 bikers with one of them being a champion.. the Dark Eldar player was pretty confident that he was going to win this combat. With everything having an extra attack on the charge, but only a few having poison it was going to be tough.. Strength 3 versus Toughness 6 meant 6s required to wound, and 5s to hit even since the God of War here has a 10 Weapon Skill!

The Dark Eldar player digs in, and begins to throw the dice.. many more than average begin to hit.. and he does score quite a few wounds.. however... the God of War is about to teach a valuable lesson upon them.. although he is reduced by 1 attack ( from some Dark Eldar gear ) he still manages to kill 3.. and win combat by 2! Taking no wounds in return.

In the second turn of combat, again the Bloodthirster drives home the hits, after weathering through a storm of attacks from the Dark Eldars. 3 more die from his attacks!

Now normally this game would end here.. but since the beginning was so confusing with the turns.. we both didn't realize the game was over.. and continued on with the game! Though to be fair, it was just to continue on this fight and see how long he would last it seems..

So during the Turn 7 combat, the Dark Eldars would again not be able to damage or get through the God of War's saves! And in return he would kill 2 more bikes in the process. This in turn would cause them to finally break and be counted as destroyed!

I have to say at this time, I am feeling pretty proud of Big Red here.. and a lot of people have gathered ( included the aforementioned ref ) to see what is going on.. and to see the rolls being made to save against the onslaught of attacks.. even my opponent at this time is no longer surprised that he is making the saves..

But he tries once more and does another round of attacks against it.. and when his last guy lands his last 2 wounds.. the mighty Bloodthirster rolls a 4 and a... 2.. finally dying in literally the last attack made by them before it would have been his turn to hit once more..

He will definitely be getting some extra attention in the future for this game..

The aftermath.. on what would have been turn 7.. The Bloodthirster was actually dead at this point.. 
And so.. there you have it.. 3 games played.. a very intense mannerism in which to remember and learn the rules for 40k once more.. and an end result of coming dead last in the tournament due to the lost of the second game on warnings!

Did I have fun? Yeah.. my opponents were great.. Would I play in a Tusot tournament again? Probably not.. and I would highly caution to any foreigners planning on taking part or joining the Tusot crowd to their attitudes and gaming mentality. Unless you have a very very solid grasp of the Turkish language, and are ok being targeted against, I would strongly advise AGAINST joining any of their tournaments. Which is really a shame considering that organization aside, the players were all really great, and helpful throughout the ordeal.

That being said, my plans to continue on with my Daemons for Fantasy will continue now.. and I will not switch focus to my 40k Orks that I was considering depending on how I felt after this tournament.

Oh well.. as one of the main organizers told me prior to playing.. "It's our way or the highway" when it comes to the rules.. and since I drove for over 10 hrs to and from this tournament on a highway.. I will take the highway at this time.. it was more enjoyable ;)

MetuCon 40k Tusot Tournament - Game 2

And so we begin the second game..

As stated.. I was not aware that there was such a large break in between games.. though I probably should have checked the scheduled list posted up as it is pretty clear.. my bad..

So I find out that I get to play against a Blood Angel player! Yay! I have played a friendly game against them once loooooong ago when the book first came out, with my Orks.. have to say they are scary in close combat.. but I was hoping I would be scarier :)

Now it is funny to say, but my opponent almost immediately informs me that he has been told something weird.. that because this is a tournament, we are not to believe our opponents, and should be playing to win at any cost.. not sure who had stated that to him, but he asked if that was my mentality. I responded with a laugh and said, "I am playing Daemons and this is my second game of 40k in a long time.. would rather play to learn and have fun.. " to which he agreed. You might find this section strange to put, but wait for the punchlines throughout the game itself where this should have been enforced..

It is worth noting that my opponent also has started with warning as his troops are not completely WYSIWYG.. personally I can agree with this for veteran players who have many models, but it seemed to me that my opponent was a new player with limited troops. But whatever.. I am not a referee nor did I set up the rules here.. so.. on wards we continue..

So as usual, I lose with regards to which section to start on ( or rather to force my opponent into a corner of my choosing ) and he places his units first. Now to say that this guy was kind is an understatement.. almost immediately once set up, he realizes one of his Razorback is over the edge of his deployment zone and begins to apologize profusely. I can honestly say I was happy to see this as it meant that this game could be played more casually and that if something messes up, just state it, and we could come to a solution.. to which we did.. since he had first turn it was easy to just say that it moved, or even didn't as I had nothing on the table, and we didn't see it as game breaking!

As you can see the Razorback is over the line.. oooo such an infraction.. my opponent was too much of a nice guy to worry about such things... but it could be the atmosphere of the tournament also.. 

So Turn 1..
With his items placed.. nothing really moved, except to get into a good firing solution, and he bunched his vehicles up behind one of the fortresses.

My Turn.. saw my first batch of flamers coming in right beside the aforementioned Razorback , with the others popping in on the other side closer to his land speeder. A Daemon Prince of Nurgle, and the Blue Bloodthirster land on the other side, closer to the second fortress.

For shooting, both big guys attempt to run, but roll 1 and 2 respectively. Meanwhile, the flamers open up!

The one closest to the rhino immobilizes it, and shakes it in the process, while also removing the meltaguns from the Storm Raven.. in hindsight.. I should have taken the Twin-Linked Plasma instead.

On the other side, the Flamers shake up the land raider and make it so it cannot shoot.

Good placement for the flamers initial drop, and for the big guys.. not so great, but not the worst. 
Turn 2.. 
With his Rhino stuck, and his Land Speeder without a gun, he speeds forward at full to get closer to the big guys. His Dreadnought goes after the further most Flamers, killing 2 with his guns, and the last in close combat.

My opponent also forgets about his reserves, and although provided the opportunity to bring them in if he wants, he foregoes it, and states that he wants to play fairly.. between us.. this conversation would continue where we would own up to our mistakes, and take the consequences.. as a game should be..

Shooting at the big guys sees no wound occur. He just does not have the same amount of guns to bear, and with his movement, he could only shoot the Lascannons at them anyways.

In my turn, I made a big mistake to begin with.. in fantasy everything can be pre-measured.. in 40k.. not so much :) I had forgotten this while moving Big Blue... and the ref politely reminded me of this. I was thinking of moving him behind the Tower after I saw he would fail the charge, but since I can't pre-measure, I moved him to where I had measured.. No problem.. the other Daemon Prince however was ok with his distances and attempted a good move against the Storm Raven.. it would also be from here on in, that the head referee would begin to watch our entire game..

NO reserves come in this turn.. very frustrating, but only fitting since none of my opponents came in either.

Flamers moved in behind the dreadnought, shaking it enough to prevent it from shooting.

Close combat saw nothing but fluff attacks getting thrown out, as I needed 6s to hit the flying behemoth!

Flamers between 2 juicy targets, and big guys ready to get into combat as soon as they can.. 

Turn 3.. 
All of Assault marines with jetpacks arrive, and they land in a triangle formation around my big guys.. the Storm Raven speeds off behind the Bloodthirster, while the speeder gets closer to the action, and the  Razorback  drives forward a bit also.

Shooting from the  Razorback  now, since its status is back to normal, see 2 flamers die. 2 wounds against the Daemon Prince of Nurgle from the assault marines and Lascannon on Razorback. His other units attempt to wound the Bloodthirster, but to no effect.

On the Daemon side, the Plaguebearers join the fight, and land behind the Lascannon totting Razorback. Horrors pop up on the hill behind one of his assault units, and put a bit of pressure on him. The lone flamer jumps up to the top of the fortress ( as we had rolled to see if it was open terrain at the beginning of the game, and it was. The ref doubled checked this after I had stated it to confirm it was true with my opponent ). And the second Daemon Prince of Nurgle pops up, and is right beside the immobilized Razorback.

For shooting the Flamer attempted to burn the Razorback once more, but fails to do anything. The horrors open up against the poor assault marines beside them, and with 42 shots, and a bolt of Tzeentch, remove the entire combat unit off the table.

*It is worthy to note that the ref jumps in here to explain the rule concerning armor saves against units with different weapons or gear. The only part I understood at this point was that each needs to be wounded separately. This part I kept in mind for future parts. When asked if all is OK, I got the traditional nod, and we continued on. *

Prior to assaulting them, the Bloodthirster attempts to shoot them with Death Strike, but fails to hit, and instead goes toe to toe with them in combat. As does the Daemon Prince with the other unit.

Combat would see both assault squads losing and causing no wounds in return.

There used to be assault marines on the hill.. Horrors are probably the only thing scary for shooting in this army with assault 3, str 4 ap 4 shooting at their disposal. 
Turn 4.. 
Trying to get around to save the immobilized Razorback the Lascannon cousin of it, attempts a quick turn around to take down that new threat that appeared. The stormraven flys over and past the fortress, and sets up for a deployment of terminators with characters soon enough. The dreadnought also begins to head up the hill once more to take up a better firing position.

However, even with the high ground, and the big guns, neither do anything to the new Daemon Prince of Nurgle threatening the immobilized Razorback.

The StormRaven was able to get a shot of his Twin-Linked Plasma guns off on the horrors, killing a few in the exchange.

Combat sees the first Daemon Prince of Nurgle kills the assault marines, and begin to wander off towards the Lascannon Razorback.

In the other combat, it is tied, with both inflicting 1 wound each. However, it is at this point that I point out a little used item that no one ever takes unless they have points left over.. like me :) The instrument of Chaos! Meaning I win by 1.. which means nothing as he passes his leadership.

*It is interesting at this point however that the Referee asks me if this is included or an upgrade, to which I agree it is an upgrade. He then also does a "random" check of my list. Not asking me what is what, just getting the other judge to check it over. The verdict.. my list is correct and I haven't done anything wrong. To boot, I played the rule correctly.. but I digress.. *

In my turn, the final piece comes on the table. Big Red! Landing further from the dreadnought that I had planned, but still on the table. The Plaguebearers move closer to the central Razorback, readying themselves for a charge.

Shooting sees the Horror with Bolt of Change take down the Land Speeder! Fire and debris everywhere! Big red also attempts to damage the dreadnought with Death Strike, but rolls a 2 for armor pen, and needed a minimum of 4..

Close combat sees the Daemon Princes charge their respected Razorbacks, with the newest one landed 5 auto hits, 4 which turn into penetrates, and the last being a glance. Needless to say the vehicle is destroyed, and the occupants are pinned after failing a leadership test.

The other one sees 20 attacks from the Plaguebearers, but none of them hitting. And only 2 penetrates from the Daemon Prince, but only a stunned and shaken result. Meaning it is going to get hit next turn!

Combat with Big Blue sees the sergeant die, and combat finalizing there.

Turn 5..
With the lose of the razorback, and the other now stuck, it wasn't looking good for the Blood Angels. Moving the Storm Raven closer, and disembarking his Terminators, and Characters to meet the threat of the forces of Nurgle beating upon his poor Razorback.

With his opening salvo of shots from the Storm Raven and characters, the Daemon Prince of Nurgle falls, and the Horrors ( whom I left in a grouped position ) suffered another round of getting slammed with the Twin Plasma guns. Losing more in the process.

Combat saw the Plaguebearers attempt to do damage to the stopped Razorback, and both stun it and removes the Lascannon from it.

With my movement, Big Blue fly to a safety of behind the back fortress, while Big Red flew to behind the dreadnought. The last Prince moves around the assault marines who were pinned, and the Plaguebearers attempted to surround the openings of the last Razorback.

*Again I would like to note that while this is happening, my list is being re-checked again, but this time I am not being asked about it.*

The lone Flamer, opened up and killed 4 of the assault marines ( after being checked for range and target by the ref as well ). Shooting from the Horrors of the bolt sees it hit, but doesn't go farther than that.

Combat sees the Prince assault the lone marine, killing him where he stands before over running 6 inches towards the dreadnought. Who had problems of his own with Big Red coming at him. However even with 5 attacks, and monstrous strength, can only manage to make him not move or shoot.. so he gets no attacks back and we stick around for another round of combat.

Turn 6..
So with a final push, the Blood Angel commander hurls his Terminators and Characters at the plaguebearers, and flies the Storm Raven behind the fortress so that he can attempt to shoot Big Blue. The razorback continues to just sit there, with its crew of 5 assault marines who are stuck thanks to the Plaguebearers blocking the exits.

So, with movement finished, he begins his shooting but unfortunately does no wounds to Big Blue once more. Also the combat with the Dreadnought sees him stunned once more and doing no attacks back.

*While moving into combat, we find out ANOTHER rule from the referee.. characters move first.. now.. it was my opponent that moved things, and to be honest it was against Plaguebearers so I did not expect much out of them. So after learning about this rule, my opponent moves his guys so that his characters are now in front. *

The combat scene is as expected.. the terminators kill 5 Plaguebearers, while another dies to a character. No wounds are hit back, and the Daemons lose, and die due to instability and fearless.. such is the life of a Daemon :)

And so on wards to my last turn.. I know there are lots of side notes here.. but it is worthy to note that I am actually winning! 6 to 3! So this turn is not really required but since we are both here.. we continue to play anyways! Plus my opponent is learning a lot about his army, and I am learning a lot about the 40k game.. almost confident I know what I am doing at this time..

So for movement, I bring the Flamer down beside the terminators lining them up for a nice BBQ, and Big Blue goes to try to hurt the Storm Raven in close combat if possible.

So with shooting to start, I begin to line up and see what I can reach with the flamer template. I think it is 6 plus Razorback, my opponent says 7, and the ref begins to interfere once more. So I attempt to roll to wound.

Now, way back in turn 3, there was the deal with the different models with different load outs.. and the way I understood it was that I needed to roll each individually.. and with everything going on over how many I am hitting, I just begin to roll.. choosing the Librarian first. As I roll, the Ref again interrupts and says I am doing it wrong. Ok.. so now it is explained once more.. but this time to me, instead of my opponent.. in the end, the number of hits is checked AGAIN.. and its from the ref that it is the whole unit.. so I begin to roll for wounding on all of them when the ref throws up his arms and explains he is sick of all my cheating and that I need another warning.. and he storms off..

My opponent and I look at each other wondering why the big fuss.. and he even states to me that it is a bit extreme. So we try to continue on, however.. yes you guessed it.. the ref comes back to me and interrupts our game once more..

Remember also back on the second turn.. when I pre-measured the distance.. or in the last post where I did not have a hard copy of the FAQ.. well this would be my third warning! So with a triumph, and a huff.. he declares that I have lost this game, stop playing, and congratulates my opponent.

Suffice it to say.. I am thoroughly confused as this is the only time he spoke English to me in the entire tournament so far, and before anything can be said.. he is off again..

We did finish the turn, and I think we still played the rule wrong, but honestly at this point it did not matter as both of us were shaken as to what was going on, and why.

I would like to point out at this time, to any members of Tusot who might read this.. I think this was incredibly unprofessional, and considering that me and my opponent had no objectives to what was happening, and correcting mistakes as they came, I think this was completely uncalled for. I have left this game, and overall the tournament, with a feeling of prejudice against me. It has left a very sour taste in my mouth concerning the refs and their interaction when not needed, versus when required.

It should also be a warning to the guys who were asking me who happened ( and were also foreigners ), and when I explained that the rules and judging were being done in pure Turkish, they too were kind of taken aback by that statement.

In the end, although I continued on to play my last game, I was less than thrilled to even be in this tournament still, let alone having to deal with someone who obviously had it out for me for some reason. If that reason can be explained, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it.

However as of now, this is my last Tusot tournament, be it 40k or the soon to be Fantasy variety. Only exception would be if it is someone who is willing to "bend" the Tusot rules, and explain the odd thing to me in English.

MetuCon 40k Tusot Tournament - Game 1

Ok.. so after having a blast on Saturday playing against BuRock and his Dwarfs.. on wards to the 40k tournament on Sunday..

I have to start off with saying.. it has been a long time since I have played 40k.. and it is pretty obvious that my blog has been pretty fantasy intensive since it started.. so I was looking to get into the other side of the gaming community, and see how the 40k side was doing. I had heard many things, and chatted with one of the clubbers about their new rule system called Tusot.. which was to be THE premier gaming rules to help promote the hobby and gaming of 40k further.. From the outset, this sounds great.. however I have to say that it took a bit of back and forth communication to better understand some of their rules, as everything is in Turkish, and Google translator was having quite the hard time to work it back into English.

So with my tablet filled with my army list, Tusot rules ( translated as best as they can be ), FAQ, my rule books, and my fully painted army.. I set off once more to MetuCon and join the others for a day filled with dice rolling, and death.

I take with me my Daemons of Chaos.. probably the hardest, and worst army to take to a tournament setting, but one that is so random whats not to love about them? Plus considering that I was coming to see how the tournament scene had changed, and after having a bad experience at IzmirCon, I was going for a more casual experience.

Casual stopped as soon as the organization begin.. I had been forewarned that it might be a bit overly Turkish in the language, but that people would be there to help when I didn't understand. I have lived in Turkey quite a while, but I am pretty slow with languages. Always been a numbers guy. That said, I can get around Turkey, and deal with people fine enough. So long as they are not govt officials, or wanting that deep of a conversation. Unfortunately.. the refs here wanted a deep understanding of Turkish... thankfully there were many friendly guys at the tournament that helped out where they could. I will point out, that at one point I tried to dive fully in, and speak Turkish back, but this was halted and I was told just speak English.. we can understand you, and will respond in Turkish. Um yay?

So whatever.. off we go and begin.. the refs begin their rounds to check who has painted armies, who brought what etc.. and BAM.. I get a warning.. I heard about these.. and if you get 3 you automatically lose a game.. ok.. so whats the warning about? No hard copy of the FAQ.. a soft copy on the tablet is not sufficient enough.. no leeway or budging by the ref, who scuttles off to mark down my first warning.. later I would see that more than half of the participants got this.. whats funny.. none of the rules in the FAQ were being used by my army.. And so we begin with a not impressive start to this tournament..

On wards to the first game though, and more importantly.. PICTURES!!!!

First up.. Dark Eldar! Never played against them before in the new codex, so I knew I was going to be plenty surprised. And oh how I was surprised! Everything was in raiders, or on bikes or on something that was neither bike or raider or was a jet fighter plane.. COOL! Jet Fighter planes.. in 40k!

And so we start..

Turn 1 -
Pretty uneventful for my opponent, as he got first turn, and then proceeded to move his transports around a bit. Since nothing of my army was on the board yet ( Daemons special deployment rules whereby everything is deep striked onto the board ). So he set himself up to get in a good position to take on any threats he had coming at him.

For the Daemons, I had rolled the side I wanted, and brought in my 2 Bloodthirsters, 10 Plaguebearers, and 3 Flamers. Only 1 Bloodthirster suffered a deep strike mishap for landing on his raider, but I rolled a 3.. meaning my opponent could place it where ever he liked.. and he placed her right in the open ready to be gunned down for crimes against Dark Eldar kind!

The Flamers had landed in a great spot and allowed me to use their Breath of Chaos against his bikers. With a 4+ to wound, and negate cover AND armor saves.. suffice it to say, they were pretty screwed. None survived that salvo of shots.

The Plaguebearers ran to hide in a building, near an objective, and the Bloodthirster sat around. Not much use from them I am afraid.

Daemons seem to be setting up for some decent charges, and holding of the objective.

Turn 2..
With the loss of his Bikers, my opponent was looking for revenge! So with some quick moves, of his vehicles, and staying within 12 inches of movement, he set up what can only be described as a firing squad position against both the Bloodthirsters, and my now infamous flamers!

Most of the vehicles had units of 10 guys each, who when within 12 inches, could rapid fire ( so shoot twice ) and had poison shots! So my high toughness was not going to save me here like normal, and each Bloodthirster took on average 30-40 shots before dying. Even with my 3+ normal, and 4++ invul saves, I could not compete with the pure volume of fire coming at me.

For the flamers he took a more personal approach to them. Since they had done so much damage to his bikes already. He shot at them, they stayed, he dismounted, and shot at them more, and they stayed.. so he assaulted them.. well.. flamers are not the best in close combat.. so staying any longer was not an option, and they were wiped out.

A good first half for the Dark Elf player, a poor showing for the Daemons. I would also be seeing, but not playing properly yet, that they are fast enough to react to coming from any side. But that doesn't mean I didn't keep this strategy up.

With the reserves coming in, I got a Daemon Prince of Nurgle, and the other 3 man Flamer unit. Flamers landed behind his transports in a good position to hurt them, and the Prince was moved slightly away, and closer to his CC unit.

Flamers this time around did not have as good of a luck however, and only managed to take out 1 of the dark lances from a raider and no other positive results.

Slightly blurry, but it was cause I had just lost 3 of my 8 units in the first "real" turn of the game.. 

Turn 3..
Well with how scary the Flamers are, he begins to move all of his vehicles at insane speeds, be it away or to get a better shot at them. He also surrounded my Daemon Prince, and decided it was better to shoot at it, then to engage it in close combat.. I would have to say this was a good strategy, as his shooting phase saw both of my units get ripped apart quite nicely. Only the plagebearers were left at this point.

The second Daemon Prince of Nurgle appears, and I finally begin to learn my lesson. So attempt to bunker him behind the building with the Plaguebearers. Horrors are still MIA.. and no real actions take place, aside from moving deeper into the building, and waiting for the Dark Eldar to approach.

I am learning at this point that Daemons and Dark Eldar are a bad match up! Dark Eldar are very quick to re-position themselves, whereas Daemons need more bodies to hold against them. Something to think about in the future.. or to buy a Dark Eldar army as they have some really cool models!

No shame in hiding.. especially when everything has poison, and the Lord of Disease apparently can still get the flu!
Turn 4..

The Dark Eldar player begins to re-maneuver his transports and fighter plane so that he can deal with the bunker being set up.

My response, is to finally bring in my last unit! My pink horrors land, again in a perfect spot, and begin to attempt to open up on the transports. They begin by opening up on the fighter plane, and causing it to be shaken. Meaning it can still move, but not shoot. Hopefully it would be enough.

The rest of my forces decide enough is enough, and attempt to charge his units! However due to the sheer distance that everything has moved, I am needing 6s to hit, and well.. I cannot say that this is really happening too much.

So what was really my last turn, everything fluffed, and I prepared to take the onslaught of shots from his transports once more!

Action happens from the Daemons side! Yay!
Turn 5..
Now with everything out in the open, and all units on the board, the Dark Eldar player had the opportunity to take out everything.

Opening up on the horrors as they seem to be the only threat at this time, they die to a hail of shots from multiple sources, and whatever was left was then picked out in close combat.

The Prince of Nurgle also was shot up after everything moved away from it.

Plaguebearers survived what little shots had come its way, but it was just time now for them to die.

Plaguebearers refuse to die.. for now.. 

Turn 6..
So not much to show here.. end result is the Plaguebeares having to survive almost 100+ shots from the entire army.. well.. let's just say that wasn't happening here ;)

Great game though.. although I lost everything and only killed 1 unit in return. I knew going in with all the transports this was going to be difficult, but the ability for some of them to move 36 inches, was just too much for me.. my strategy of being able to come in from different sides, and trying to split his fire almost worked.. but I underestimated how much fire he had to deal out :)

My opponent was great throughout the game, I don't think we had any major disagreements, and it flowed through very quickly.

I have to shout out apologies to him though.. he had asked if I wanted to go and grab a bite to eat afterwards, but I had thought we didn't have much time before second game started so declined. As it turned out.. we had almost an hour :( Had I known it would have been better to have lunch with him than eating alone 10-15 minutes before the second game started. Should have asked questions I guess..

Next game.. against Blood Angels! An army that Daemons can actually do stuff to.. sometimes ;)

Terrain: Hills

Although the mega game is over, I thought I should show off a piece of terrain that I hastily built literally days before leaving for Ankara.

After having a discussion with my opponent BuRock about the set up, it was decided that we would play on a 8x6 foot table. Giving our armies much room to move and perform something that might resemble tactics.

That being said, we noticed that we have a distinct lack of hills to help BLOS in such a large area. I have some but they are mostly for my shelves to display my armies on. Plus, 1 or more sides are not touched, and are of that poor white styrofoam quality, so they break up very quickly.

So.. with the mentality of needing hills, and having the push of the mega game quickly approaching, I set to work on building 2 hills of 2 layers each. To give cover to infantry, and larger models depending on the direction you look at them from.

Initially I just cut up some dense yellow insulation foam into squares, and then carved them into a more round or oval like shape. I then began to slowly carve away the sides.. which was taking forever, and I thought that there had to be a faster way to give it a rocky or rough look.

Then it hit me! I had seen a video on YouTube a while back of a guy in Australia going by the name of RubbishInRubbishOut ( check out his YouTube feed also ) who had a really quick, and dirty, method of creating a rough edge on hills..

So taking his lead, I set to work to create 2 hills. I only borrowed this process, as he then went on to paint them and the board itself with an industrial spray painter for buildings or rooms. I don't have one of those, so I pulled out some old tubes of paint, and found a brown that looked good. A real dark chocolate color that could be good for a base, and allow me to easily drybrush over it afterwards.

To which I did :)

The only difference I did to mine over his, was to add some of my favorite texturing material, Vallejo Black Lava, to a section. This was then painted in layers of grey to represent rock instead of just a muddy hill like the rest. I really need to invest in the other brands.. I know I keep saying this, but it has to be done now. No excuses on my part.. ok, maybe a few.. but still..

End result can be seen below.. I attempted to add some flock to the top of them also, to tie them more into the GW Battle Mat.

Hope you liked them.. and hopefully I will have more to show in time with some variations in them to represent other types of hills like temple of skulls or scree slope.
